Come in and find out what it's all about!
The TLC is located on the bottom level of the Library in Hudson Hall - Room H232

Faculty and professional staff at a fast growing number of real-life educational institutions are exploring the educational potential of the 3D Virtual Campus. In the workshop we will explore this emerging technology; topics covered will include communications, emergency preparedness, programming, art, architecture and machinima (the virtual world version of film making).

Professors from Ohio University, Harvard, New York City University, California State, University of Cincinnati, San Francisco State University, the Rochester Institute of Technology, Vassar College, and many more have used Second Life (www.secondlife.com) in their courses, a multi-user online virtual environment where you meet and collaborate with colleagues and students through a representation of yourself called an "avatar." Many universities and colleges are providing 3D virtual campus tours and other student services in this engaging MMOW (Massively Multiplayer Online World).

Closer to home,  the SUNY SLN MIDs, under the direction of Keith Lynip and Larry Doogan, have established Friends of SUNY on Second Life to explore the dynamics of the 3D virtual world in online education.

In this walk-in workshop, you will experience Second Life, and create a representation of yourself as an "avatar." You will walk, run and fly through cities, parks, college campuses, and explore communities of creative, fun-loving people among the one million residents (real people) who inhabit this world. We will visit Vassar College and take a 3D virtual tour of the campus, created by Bret Rydell (Ingerman) .

You will be provided with a resource guide, glossary and a list of online references for other Web 2.0 technologies (podcasting, wikis, blogs, social bookmarking, tag-based folksonomy, FOAF, etc.) used to stimulate and ignite communication and learning in Higher Education.  The Teaching Learning Center will hold a Web 2.0 Open House throughout the week.  The student partners in technology will explain, demonstrate and answer your questions about this emergent media available for use in higher education.

Come on in to the TLC and find out what your students and colleagues are talking about...blogs, wikis, podcasting?  We'll show you.
